Saturday, August 21 is the date for the next great comics event at Chapel Hill Comics: The Local Artist Mini-Comic Party!

North Carolina is home to a host of talented comic artists, from comic industry professionals, to aspiring professionals, to folks who draw comics just because they feel like it. Some of these folks make mini-comics, and we love mini-comics at Chapel Hill Comics! In fact, we love mini-comics so much that we’re throwing a party so that you can come meet the creators of some of these mini-comics, learn a little about the comics and their creators, and support local indie art while you’re doing it!

If you don’t know what mini-comics are, the answer is pretty simple: They’re little, self-published comics. In fact, the “little” is less important than the self-published.  Some of the “mini-comics” we’ve carried over the years have been bigger than the standard-sized comics we carry from companies like Marvel and DC!

In addition to mini-comics, some creators will be bringing other items they have made for sale and exhibition, such as prints, paintings, plush dolls, and more, so this isn’t just a mini-comic party; it’s also a local art bazaar!  It’ll be a perfect night to pick up something for yourself, as well as gifts for your friends!

So who’s going to be there? That’s a fine question. We have a very wide range of artists participating!  Meet the artists and see some of their art below:

THOMAS BOATWRIGHT

Thomas Boatwright was born in the northern Piedmont region of NC. His mother put a crayon in his hand as soon as he could hold one. After he ate it, she gave him another and he began to draw. He hasn’t stopped since.

He is artist and co-creator of Cemetery Blues and Zeke Deadwood: Zombie Lawman. He plays a five string banjo and builds simple guitars out of old boxes.

KEVIN DIXON

Kevin Dixon does comics, sculpture, and painting. His comics include Gilgamesh, And Then There Was Rock, and Mickey Death. Kevin is also the originator of Origitals, which are original unique digital art prints. He has also performed in bands like Bringerer, Dexter Romweber and the New Romans, and Zen Frisbee.

MAX HUFFMAN

Max Huffman is a sixteen-year-old cartoonist living in Chapel Hill. A couple days a week, he makes the webcomic Mocktopus, and sometimes people read it. When he isn’t doing that, he’s going to school or performing improv or sleeping. You can see more of his work at: http://yourfriendmax.com

ERIC KNISLEY

Born in Asheville, NC in 1961, Eric Knisley began drawing at an early age and never stopped, despite having decent and honorable parents. He was inspired by the work of Jack Kirby to begin making comics. The underground comics explosion of the late sixties and early seventies convinced him that comics could be “art”, and, sustained by this laughable illusion, he’s been cranking ‘em out ever since.

He’s self-published numerous books over the years, both solo and working with others, notably Kevin Dixon, with whom he won a Xeric grant in 1996 for “Mickey Death and the Winds of Impotence”. His work has appeared in the Independent, TRASH, NERVE, various online incarnations, and in an educational comic from UNC-Chapel Hill. He also works in animation, illustration, photography and giant immersive projection systems, including classified work for the US Armed Forces. He has lived in the Triangle area on and off forever, aside from a couple of years in Europe. He likes pie.

YANA LEVY

Yana Levy is eight years old. She has been reading comic books since she was four. At the time, she couldn’t actually read them, she just liked the pictures. She writes and illustrates the Cheep series of mini comics about a chick who has been described as “adorably clueless.”

ADAM MEUSE

Adam Meuse, creator of Sad Animals and Social Insect, works for a printing company. He enjoys drawing funny things for his co-workers. At home, he paints portraits and draws more “serious” cartoons. He’s currently working on a longer book which may be published in the next year. He’s probably lactose intolerant, but cannot avoid ice cream.

LEAH RILEY

Leah Riley is a lady who makes things. For some inexplicable reason, most of these creations have mustaches or tentacles, which she thinks are adorable. She can draw and sew and eat lots of sugar without batting an eye. Sometimes she does all three at the same time - JUST BECAUSE SHE CAN!

The creator of Willrad, the formerly thrice-weekly updated webcomic, as well as several mini-comics and plushies, Leah maintains that each day deserves a good amount of whimsy and friendly robots.

SAUL ZIMET

Saul Zimet is an artist of many media who loves writing and drawing comics. He is 15 years old and has been making comics off and on for several years. He has participated in several Chapel Hill Comics events, such as kids’ art shows, a solo art show, and 24-hour Comics Days. He often takes months-long breaks from making comics, and is most interested in speculative fiction.

Pretty impressive lineup, huh? Come on and meet these folks at Chapel Hill Comics on Saturday, August 21, from 6pm until 9pm. You can hang out with the artists, buy their comics, get them signed, and have a great time!

If you’re an artist who makes mini-comics and wants to be involved in one of these parties in the future, email us and let us know! We’re open to doing this again if the event goes well! In the meantime, make sure to come meet your peers at this event!

SCOTT PILGRIM’S FINEST HOUR MIDNIGHT RELEASE PARTY!

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that we will be hosting a release party for the final Scott Pilgrim volume: SCOTT PILGRIM’S FINEST HOUR! The official release date for this book is Tuesday, July 20. For those of you who want to read it first, we’ll be selling it at midnight!

Monday, July 19, we’ll close our doors at 9pm, as per usual, but we’ll reopen at 11pm. For an hour, we’ll be open with snacks, and then at midnight, Scott Pilgrim volume 6 will go on sale!

We also have a very limited amount of posters which we’ll be giving away. Want to see? Check it out at the bottom of the page! How do you get one? Show up in costume, and show up early! We’ve only got… let’s see, 7 of these posters, and they’ll go to the first 7 folks who show up at Chapel Hill Comics dressed as a Scott Pilgrim character!

Will we also have copies of the first five Scott Pilgrim books?  Of course we will.  Will we have copies of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s previous graphic novel, Lost at Sea?  Yeah, we’ll have some of those too.  We’ll also have all the stuff we normally carry that’s not Scott Pilgrim, so you can just stock up on whatever you need!

We’ll stay open as long as we’re selling stuff.  Big line of people show up for the book?  We’ll stay open!

October 18, 2008 was 24 Hour Comic Day. Artists gathered all over the world to attempt to create 24 pages of comics in 24 hours. Here are some of the results from Chapel Hill Comics. More will be forthcoming, just as soon as we have the time!

• Fight Scene by Eric Knisley. A superhero parody by our pal Eric Knisley, co-creator of Mickey Death. It’s great!
• Waffles and Strudels in Thanks for the Dismemberies by Andrew Neal. This one’s mine. I failed the challenge since I only completed 14 pages, but it turned out pretty well. This one contains cartoon gore, so if you’re cartoon squeamish, be warned.
