Chapel Hill Comics is pleased to announce yet another fine signing event!
On Saturday, March 27, from 1pm until 3pm, Clay and Susan Griffith will be signing copies of their new comic book biography of Nelson Mandela, Political Power: Nelson Mandela!
The Griffiths are writers who are best known for their involvement in various Tick comics, including Man-Eating Cow, Paul the Samurai, The Tick: Karma Tornado, and more.
There’s lots to be said about Nelson Mandela. Here’s the solicitation information for the comic.
A symbol of the struggle against racial and political oppression and a model for sustaining that struggle with grace and decency, Nelson Mandela could have had a life of ease, but he chose a different route. After 25 years in prison, he was elected the first black president in South Africa’s first multi-racial election. Refusing to equate victory with revenge, he called on both supporters and former oppressors to work to heal his fragile country. Mandela realized his place in African democracy, so he set an example by relinquishing power after his term in office. He has become a beloved international figure, an icon dedicated to sacrifice for those in need.
We will have copies of the Nelson Mandela comic available at the signing; it’s just $3.99. We’ll also have limited quantites of the paperback editions of the Griffiths’ Tick comics.
We are very proud to announce that Peter Kuper, one of the modern giants of comics and illustration, will be appearing at Chapel Hill Comics on Thursday, March 18, from 7pm until 8:30pm! Check it out:
Peter Kuper Is the co-founder of the political zine World War 3 illustrated and has been drawing Spy vs Spy for Mad magazine since 1997. He has produced over twenty books including The System and an adaptaion of Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. His latest book Diario de Oaxaca is a sketchbook journal of two years he spent in Oaxaca, Mexico. He has just completed illustrating a Spanish language version of Alice in Wonderland. More of his work can be found at www.peterkuper.com
We’ll have copies of Diario de Oaxaca and Spy vs Spy: The Joke and Dagger Files on hand for folks to purchase and have signed.
Peter will also be appearing earlier that evening at the Nasher Museum at Duke University (click here to learn about the event) and is appearing at Chapel Hill Comics with their cooperation!

Before I get into the promotion of our upcoming events, I would like to thank all our customers who donated last week to our Haiti Fundraiser! We collected $683.96 in donations from our customers, and as promised, are matching $500 of that, so we sent off a grand total of $1183.96. If you intended to donate and didn’t have a chance, we encourage you to do so on your own.
In fact, why not head to Mediterranean Deli today, Tuesday, January 26? Jamil, the owner of Med Deli, has pledged that they will donate 100% of their sales today to the Red Cross for Haiti Earthquake relief. Med Deli is just a few doors up the street from us. Here’s their website: http://www.mediterraneandeli.com/
ON TO THE EVENTS
Folks, it’s time to flip your calendars ahead a month and mark them up. Chapel Hill Comics is hosting three fantastic events in February, and they’re all going to be great.
Get ready for the funkiest event of the winter. On February 6, we’ll host Jim Rugg, artist and co-creator of Afrodisiac, and Chris Pitzer, publisher of Afrodisiac and president of Adhouse Books. What is Afrodisiac? It’s blaxploitation comics drawn in the style of 1970’s Marvel Comics, and it’s an early contended for the best book of 2010!
Ben Towle is the artist of Disney’s newest graphic novel for younger readers, Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean! Join us on Sunday, February 21, when Mr. Towle will give a presentation on the creation of the book, and will sign copies! Bring the kids, let them ask questions and learn about the process, and grab them a copy of the book, signed by Ben Towle!
One of our most popular signings last year was was Ursula Vernon, artist of the graphic novel/prose hybrid Dragonbreath! This February she’ll be back to sign the second book in the series, Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs! She’ll also be signing copies of her young readers novel Nurk (One of Oprah’s picks! Not too shabby) and book collections of her ongoing webcomic Digger!
Now with a wide range of comics and books like that, I know at least one of them has got to appeal to you. Look for reminders in the upcoming weeks, and we hope to see you then!
Thanks,
Andrew Neal

Wow! It’s our third signing in February 2010, and it’ll be a doozy! One of our most successful signing events in 2009 was when we hosted Ursula Vernon to celebrate the release of the first volume of Dragonbreath! The second book in this young readers series is due this February, and we’re happy to say that Ms. Vernon is returning for another signing event!
On Saturday, February 27, from 1pm to 3pm, please come meet Ursula Vernon, pick up some books, and get her to sign them for you!
In Dragonbreath, Ursula Vernon uses both comic panels and text to tell the story of Danny Dragonbreath, the only mythical dragon in a school for reptiles and Amphibians.
Kirkus gave Dragonbreath a starred review which stated: “…Danny D’s first outing will leave readers in stitches– and on tenterhooks waiting for the next one…”
Ursula’s books are no stranger to praise.Oprah’s Book Clubincluded Ursula’s previous book, Nurk: The Strange, Surprising Adventures of a (Somewhat) Brave Shrew, on its Kids Reading List for kids 10 to 12 years old!
At the signing, we’ll have copies on hand of both volumes of Dragonbreath, including the brand new Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs, as well as Nurk! We’ll also have copies of the books in Ms. Vernon’s ongoing comic series Digger, the tagline of which is, “A Wombat. A Dead God. A very peculiar epic.” Digger is recommended for older children, teens, and adults.
Note: This event was originally scheduled for Saturday, February 20, but has been moved to allow Mr. Towle to make an appearance at the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont.
February 2010 at Chapel Hill Comics is going to be chock full of great signings! Here’s the next one!
On Sunday, February 21, 2010, from 2pm until 4pm, Chapel Hill Comics will host Ben Towle, artist of Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean, published by Hyperion/Disney and presented by the Center for Cartoon Studies. It’s a graphic novel aimed at young readers, which was written by Sarah Stewart Taylor and drawn by Mr. Towle. It will be released this February.
In addition to signing copies of Amelia Earhart; This Broad Ocean, Mr. Towle will also give a presentation about the process he used to create the art, which should be highly interesting both to people who want to learn about how a professional cartoonist works, and kids who want to see how the book they’re reading was made!
Want to know more about the book? Here’s the publisher information:
“Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, their failure must be but a challenge to others.” — Amelia Earhart
Amelia Earhart developed a love of flying at a very young age…and she wasn”t about to let any man get in the way of her dreams. What began as a simple joy became something much deeper — a commitment to open doors for all women. As Amelia built a name for herself in the field of aviation — breaking numerous records along the way — she paved the road for future trailblazers, women like Danica Patrick, the first woman to win an Indy car race, and Eileen Collins, the first female space shuttle pilot. In Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean, Taylor and Towle focus on Amelia’’s triumphant crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 1928, offering us a glimpse at her relentless ambition and her tireless will to promote women’s rights. But above all, author and illustrator leave us with a sense of her deep-rooted desire to touch the sky.
In addition to copies of Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean, we’ll also have some copies available of Mr. Towle’s previous works, Midnight Sun and Farewell, Georgia, both of which were written and drawn by Mr. Towle. We’re very much looking forward to this event!

We love to host events at Chapel Hill Comics, even when they’re not strictly comic related! Sometimes an opportunity comes along which is too good to pass up, and this is one of those occasions.
Jeff Vandermeer is a writer who is a two-time winner of the World Fantasy Award. He has also been a finalist for the Hugo Award, the Philip K. Dick Award, the International Horror Guild Award, the British Fantasy Award, the Bram Stoker Award, and the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. His most recent books have made the year’s best lists of Publishers Weekly, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Los Angeles Weekly, Publishers’ News, and Amazon.com.
Jeff is currently in the midst of an Endurance Tour in support of two of his recently released books, Finch (steampunk fantasy) and Booklife (nonfiction about writing and promoting your book)! Chapel Hill Comics is very proud to be the Jeff’s stop in the Triangle! But not only will we have Jeff Vandermeer, we’ll have authors Mur Lafferty and Natania Barron as well. Check it out:
Some Assembly Required! For those of you who want to know more about the books we’ll have available for you to purchase and have signed, here you go!
FINCH by Jeff Vandermeer:
From Publisher’s Weekly:
VanderMeer’s third book set in the fungus-laden city of Ambergris is an engrossing recasting of the hard-boiled detective novel. Traditional tropes—femmes fatales, double-crossing agents, underworld crime lords—mix seamlessly with a world in which humans struggle to undermine the authority of sentient fungi a century after the events of 2006’s Shriek: An Afterword. By the time titular detective Finch solves the double murder of a human and a fungus, he’s been drawn into a conflict in which he’s rarely sure who’s manipulating him or why he’s so important to their plans. VanderMeer’s stark tone is brutally powerful at times, and his deft mix of genre-blurring style with a layered plot make this a joy to read. Though the book stands well on its own, fans of the earlier Ambergris novels will appreciate it even more. (Nov.)
BOOKLIFE by Jeff Vandermeer
From Publisher’s Weekly:
Author and blogger VanderMeer (Finch) outlines ways for writers to harness both the emerging power of the Internet and their own creativity in this informative guide. VanderMeer differentiates between a Public Booklife (marketing the book and the writer) and a Private Booklife (strategies to help get words on the page) and suggests that one’s ideal Booklife is a dynamic balance of the two. Even though the Web’s landscape is constantly shifting, his hints about ways to maximize a writer’s exposure—including weighing the pros and cons of Facebook, MySpace and Twitter—can certainly be applied to future social networking sites and blogs. The tips for creating a flourishing Public Booklife will appeal to a wide variety of writers, from those just starting out to those trying to navigate the changing world of book publishing, while the Private Booklife section seems more tailored to new authors. With anecdotes from VanderMeer’s own life as a writer, reviewer and blogger, as well as input from agents, editors and publicists, this guide will surely help writers traverse the often difficult journey from first draft to finished product. (Oct. 15)
We hope to see lots of you at the event!
Thanks,
Andrew Neal
