Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that as part of our 10th/35th Anniversary Festivities, we will host Elena “Yamino” Barbarich for a signing event on Saturday, July 6, from 5-7pm! We have commissioned Elena to create an exclusive cover for My Little Pony Micro-Series #5: Pinkie Pie, and she will be on hand to sign the comic! This is a single issue story which can be read by My Little Pony Fans regardless of whether they have picked up other comics in the series!

And oh yeah: It’s going to sparkle! This Pony comic is going to be glittered up. That’s right. When it comes to exclusive Pony covers, Chapel Hill Comics recommends you go hard or go home.

Whoa whoa whoa you guys! Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that as part of our 10th/35th Anniversary Festivities, we will host Lisa Hanawalt on Saturday, June 29, from 6pm until 9pm, when she will sign her new book, My Dirty Dumb Eyes!

We are super-excited about this one. Store owner Andrew Neal’s favorite publication last year was Lisa’s mini-comic Sell Your Boobs. She’s really funny, man. You want to see some funny stuff she has done? OK. Here are some links for you.

…Lisa Hanawalt’s first book is out this month. It’s called My Dirty Dumb Eyes and it is exactly as weird, obscene, hilarious, and gross as you might expect. It is awash in penises, butts, poop, and pudenda. It features talking anthropomorphic horses and birds that fart out of the tops of their heads.

I hope we don’t need to convince you to come to this event. It’s going to be great, and if you don’t make it, you will probably regret it for a considerable amount of time. There will be more information posted soon!

12 Reasons to Die Ghost Variant!

Twelve Reasons to Die #1 Chapel Hill Comics Exclusive Cover!

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that as part of our 10th/35th anniversary celebration, we will offer an exclusive CHC cover to the new Ghostface Killah comic, 12 Reasons to Die, as well as a super-limited variant signed by Ghostface.

UPDATE: MAY 8, 2013: There is also a Ghost Variant for 12 Reasons, which was top secret until it shipped! We have it, and the Chapel Hill Comics cover available in the shop, and at our webstore!

Here’s the press release, in which our esteemed boss is quoted:

Black Mask Studios, RZA, and Ghostface Killah are partnering with local comic shops along Ghost’s upcoming tour route to release ‘Tour Variant’ editions of the 12 REASONS TO DIE comic. The Tour Variant edition will feature an exclusive cover that ties in directly with the visuals of the album, and each store’s allotment of books will be branded with the store’s logo.

Each store will also receive a small number of ‘Ticket Variants.’ Limited to a pressing of only 150 copies, the Ticket Variant is autographed by Ghostface and gets the owner of the comic into Ghost’s local concert for free.

12 REASONS TO DIE hits stores on May 8th.

“There’s already a huge crossover between the worlds of comics and hip-hop, and I’m excited to be a part of the Tour Variant program. It should be a great opportunity to introduce hip-hop heads who might be new to comics to all the great storytelling we have to offer as a medium,” said Andrew Neal, owner of Chapel Hill Comics.

“Working with Black Mask means we’re supported by people who are actively trying to put our books in front of new readers, get new people in comic shops, and make people who would never step into comic shops find our stuff. It’s especially great to be doing the limited tour variants and the street team promotions for our book. The hip-hop community is both underappreciated and underrepresented by comic companies and it’s nice to be working with Black Mask to change that,” said 12 REASONS TO DIE writer Matthew Rosenberg.

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that as part of our 10th/35th Anniversary Festivities, we will host Tom Batiuk on Saturday, June 8, from 2pm until 4pm, when he will sign The Complete Funky Winkerbean books one and two!

For more than four decades, Tom Batiuk’s “Funky Winkerbean” has been a fixture in the comics page of newspapers nationwide. Initially set in high school centered around a group of students and a handful of teachers and employees — including the secretary who actually ran the school and Harry L. Dinkle, the self-proclaimed “world’s greatest band director.” In 1992, Batiuk relaunched the strip, jumping forward in time, something he did again in 2007.

During this time Batiuk has received both praise and criticism for combining dramatic and comedic elements and tackling issues ranging from bullying to teen pregnancy to cancer and death. In 2007, Batiuk was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for “”Lisa’s Story”,” a story arc in which the character succumbed to cancer. In addition to his work on “Funky,” from 1979-1990 Batiuk wrote the strip “John Darling” and since 1987 has been writing “Crankshaft” for his former classmate Chuck Ayers to draw.
