I’ve just read the first issue of Criminal, which is due to arrive next week, on Wednesday, October 4, and it’s great.

Criminal is the new ongoing comic from Ed Brubaker (Captain America, Gotham Central, and much more) and Sean Phillips (Marvel Zombies, Wildcats, Hellblazer, and much more). I was a big fan of their previous collaboration, Sleeper, so I knew I’d like Criminal, but I didn’t know how much I’d like it. Well, I like it a lot.

Criminal #1 introduces us to several characters. The main character is Leo, who is basically the world’s best pickpocket. He’s an expenienced and very skilled criminal who hasn’t done a big job since his last big job went bust five years ago. In this issue Leo’s old business associate Seymour attempts to recruit Leo for a new job.

Specifics about the story should be read rather than described; I don’t want to spoil anything for you. I will say that this is a perfect setup issue. The dialogue and character interaction is very real, and the artwork is great. Sean Phillips is a storytelling master.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes crime drama, and to anyone who likes good comics, for that matter. It looks to have all the stuff that made Sleeper great, but grounding it in the real world instead of Wildstorm’s super-hero filled universe looks like it will make it even better.

Criminal #1 is $2.99 and will be out Wednesday, October 4. It’s not a kid’s book, due to violence and language. There are also four volumes of Sleeper which collect the entirety of Brubaker and Phillips’ previous collaboration. We’ve got them in stock now.

Well, so far the Back Room Dollar Sale has been another fun time at Chapel Hill Comics! We sold tons of back issue comics at a dollar each, as well as lots of cheap graphic novels, manga, posters, prints, toys, and statues!

Thanks to everyone who made it out for the sale, and have fun reading your comics! If you haven’t made it in yet, the sale is still going strong, with another three hours to go today! It’ll last until 6pm today, Sunday, September 24!

We had a great time at our Drunken Monkey signing last Wednesday! Creator Rich Stahnke hung out an hour longer than advertised, since traffic for the store and the signing were high!

The sale is this Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24, from noon until 6 pm in our Top Secret Back Room! We have 10,000 Comics at $1 each! We’ve been telling you that for a little while now. Let’s get to the updates:

SUPER FUN ORGANIZATION
For those of you who attended our Top Secret Back Room Sale last year, you should know that all the comics are alphabetically organized so bring your lists! All comics are now elevated on tables, so you won’t have to dig around on the floor! Also, all comics that were bagged together have been separated out for your browsing convenience! We have have also added comics since last year’s sale!

GRAPHIC NOVELS
We will have a large selection of graphic novels in the sale. Some will be priced as low as $1 each, and all of them will be cheap! Details will be available at the sale!

MANGA
We have also added a ton of manga to the sale. All manga in the sale will be discounted at least 40%! Details will be available at the sale!

We will continue to organize and rearrange the back room until we open it up for sales, so that we can fit as much stuff in there as possible for you browsing and buying enjoyment! We hope to see you this Saturday and Sunday between Noon and 6pm! Cheap comics, ya’ll!

[DRUNKEN MONKEY SIGNING THIS WEDNESDAY!]

This Wednesday, September 20, we will be hosting Richard Stahnke, writer and artist of the new full-color comic from Silent Devil Studios, Furious Fist of the Drunken Monkey!

From 1-3 pm on September 20, Richard will be signing copies of Drunken Monkey: Origin of the Species #1, which we will have on hand for customers to purchase. Atendees will also be able to enter their names in a drawing to receive an original page of art from the comic, which will be given away at the end of the event!

Between the signing and the fact that Civil War #4 will finally be arriving this week, we hope to see lots of you there!

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to announce that this year, we will be one of the hosts for 24 Hour Comic Day 2006! We’ll start things off with some information from 24 Hour Comics Headquarters:

What is a 24 hour comic?
It’s a challenge: one cartoonist tries to create a full 24 page comic, normally months of work, in 24 straight hours.

What is 24 Hour Comics Day?
It’s an international celebration of comics creation. Cartoonists all over take the challenge of trying to create a 24 page comic story in 24 straight hours.

Sound like fun? We think so, too. Here are the details for 24 Hour Comics Day!

• The Place: Chapel Hill Comics!
• The Date: Saturday, October 7 through Sunday, October 8, 2006.
• Doors will open at 10:00 am.
• Work on the comics is scheduled to begin at 10:30!
• The workspace will remain open until 1:00 pm on Sunday, but we definitely recommend getting started and finished by our recommended start time (10:30 am), since the Festifall street fair will be starting at 1 pm on Sunday.

If staying up all night creating a comic is your idea of fun, we’d be happy to have you! Here’s what we’ll provide:

• The event will be staffed at all times by Chapel Hill Comics staff, as well as the fine folks at Lulu.com, everyone’s favorite print-on-demand publisher.
• We will provide space, tables, and chairs for people to work on their comics.
• Chapel Hill Comics and Lulu.com will provide snacks and drinks, both caffeinated and non-caffeinated!
• We’ll provide a selection of basic drawing supplies, but you’ll want to bring the good stuff (your favorite drawing implements and paper) yourself.
• We’ll be working with Lulu to make copies of all comics created at the event to send to 24 Hour Comics headquarters.

And here’s what we’ll need from you:

• Let us know you’re coming: Email me at neal@chapelhillcomics.com to let me know that you’re interested in participating. We have a limited amount of space available and will announce if all seats are filled.
• Art Supplies! Like I said before, we’ll provide basic art supplies, but you’ll need to bring the stuff you like to draw with to make sure you’ve got it!
• Food and drink! Like I said before, we’ll be providing food and drink, but if you want to bring what you like to make sure you’ve got it, feel free! Snacks, sodas, coffee, and energy drinks are all fine!
• Transportation! We’re not worried about you getting here, but we don’t want anyone driving themselves home after staying up all night. For those of you who don’t live within walking distance or who can’t arrange a ride, we will be able to provide some people with rides home. We’ll have more information on this as we get closer to the date, and will work out the store-assisted rides home to go out before the start of Festifall.

I think we’re going to have a great time, and I hope a lot of you will join us for the event and make your attempts at drawing a 24-page comic in 24 Hours! We will have more information on the event as we get closer to the date, but feel free to email us if you have any questions in the meantime!
