This Wednesday, we’re scheduled to receive volume 6 of Runaways, one of the finest Superhero books being published today. Have you been reading Runaways? If you’re a regular customer at Chapel Hill Comics, there’s a good chance you have, since it’s one of our top-selling comic and graphic-novel series. If you haven’t been reading it, here’s why you should! (much of the text in this review has been jacked from the old website.)
Runaways is an ongoing series written by Brian Vaughan. The basic premise of this book is that a bunch of rich kids find out their parents are supervillains and go on the run. It’s a very fun series which, like Y, The Last Man has a tendency to leave readers waiting for the next issue with baited breath.
The characterization is very strong, as is the dialogue. A lot of the time, books about teenagers ring false because the dialogue doesn’t seem real; it seems like some old dude’s idea of how kids should talk. Vaughan, however, has a really good ear for the way kids speak. Of course, I may just be an old dude who thinks this other old dude knows what he’s doing. I don’t think so, though. The dialogue in these comics is up there with Joss Whedon’s dialogue in Buffy, Angel, or Firefly. It’s funny, and clever, and reflects the way people actually speak. In fact, Joss Whedon is scheduled to take over this series once Vaughan is done with the book!
The art is fantastic as well. Runaways is Adrian Alphona’s first professional published comic work, but he’s very good. He brings just as must authenticity to the characters as Vaghan’s dialogue does. He dresses the characters in modern, trendy clothes that teenagers actually wear. His style is very playful and fun, while still being very solid and consistent. Takeshi Miyazawa handled the art chores on a few fill-in issues, and did an equally good job. His style fits right in with Alphona’s.
There have currently been 39 issues of the comic series: the first series ran 18, and the second series, which is ongoing, has run 21 so far. As of this Wednesday, there will be 6 paperback collections available, each of which collects 6 issues of the comic and is $7.99. There’s also a deluxe hardcover which collects the first 18 issues (or the first 3 paperbacks), which is larger-sized, and includes a forward from Vaughan, sketches by Alphona, and a fan letter from Joss Whedon.
Thanks,
Andrew Neal

This week, we’re scheduled to finally receive the fifth issue in David Petersen’s fantastic fastasy comic, Mouse Guard. We’ve done exceptionally well with this book, so this is mainly a note for those of you who have noticed it’s running late and asked when it’ll be here!
For those of you who haven’t read this comic, here’s a review I wrote at the old web site back when Issue #1 first came out. This is still a great book; everything I wrote in the original review still applies!
Originally published Feb. 25, 2006:
This week we received Mouse Guard #1: In the Belly of the Beast by David Petersen, and it’s a good read! There’s a lot going for it. First of all, it’s got really nice, full-color art. Second, while this is the first issue of a six-issue series, it’s a complete story that introduces you to the setting and concept really well. Third, it’s about MICE WITH SWORDS. How can you go wrong with that?
“Mice with swords?” you might say. “Didn’t they already do that?” There is a fantasy book series by Brian Jacques called Redwall, which is, in fact, about mice with swords. And, yeah, well, Petersen was probably influenced by Redwall, but this is still a really good comic. There’s an introduction on the inside front cover which lets you know what’s different here if you’re familiar with Redwall:
…After persevering against a weasel warlord in the winter war of 1149, the territories are no longer as troubled. True, the day to day dangers exist, but no longer are the Guard soldiers, instead they are escorts, pathfinders, weather watchers, scouts and bodyguards for the mice who live among the territories.
Anyway, enough with the Redwall comparisons, and on to why this is a good comic. Like I said before, the art is really good. Petersen’s delicate linework and beautiful colors make this a really nice looking book. He also uses the square format really well. Design nerds like myself know that it’s harder cause the eye to flow through a square than a rectangle because the square is a very static shape, but Petersen is good enough that it really seems like this comic was supposed to be this shape. It reads really well. Also, the mice with swords are adorable.
On to the story: basically, and so as not to spoil it for you, this comic is about three mice who set out to find a merchant mouse who went missing while delivering a wagon of rice. It’s well told, and is a really good introduction to the world of Mouse Guard. This is clearly the first issue in a series, but it works well as an individual unit. The ending made me want to read the next issue, but wasn’t so tied to what’s coming next that it read as an unsatisfying piece of a story.
And finally, it’s mice with swords. Who doesn’t like that? I mean, really. The publisher’s website recommends this comic for ages ten and up, which I’d say is fair. There’s some mouse-and-sword-related violence in here. We’ve already sold most of the stack of these that I ordered, and we’ll definitely be reordering this one to stock and recommend.
Thanks,
Andrew Neal

So Brian Wood has been turning out a lot of good comics lately: Local, DMZ, , and Demo, just to name a few. My favorite of all the stuff he’s done lately is called Supermarket. Because I couldn’t describe it any better, here’s the blurb from the publisher:
Cash Rules Everything Around Me.・In the future world of Supermarket, it’s the literal truth. Legitimate and black-market economies rule the City, overseen by the vying factions of the Yakuza and Porno Swede crime families. Convenience store clerkette and 16-year old suburban wise-ass Pella Suzuki suddenly finds herself in the middle of it all, heir to an empire she couldn’t possibly inherit, but hitmen on both sides aren’t taking any chances.
Sound fun? It is! There’s nothing bad about a gang war between the Yakuza and the Swedish Porn Mafia. The story is very engaging, and the art is absolutely beautiful. Kristian Donaldson created the art for this series, from the pencil-work all the way to the finished colors and covers. The cover to the book were wonderfully designed, and were reminiscent of screen-printed poster art. This was probably the prettiest comic on the racks when it was coming out, and now it’s collected all in one place!
We’ll have a big stack of these in stock this Wednesday. They’re $17.99, full color, and beautiful. Come on in and consume!
Thanks,
Andrew Neal
