Plain Janes is a pleasant surprise of a book—smart and entertaining for readers of all ages, including the young women DC is targeting with their “Minx” imprint. Jim Rugg’s name on the cover gave me pause, as I was a big fan of his Street Angel series, so I picked it up.
The story follows “Main Jane,” a survivor of a terrorist attack on a metropolitan city whose alarmist parents have moved the family to a distant suburb. Main Jane deals with the aftermath of the attack and adjustment to a new high school with a very different culture. Longing for ways to make her new country life seem less dull, Main Jane forms an alliance with a group of outcasts, all of whom also happen to be named “Jane.” As the “P.L.A.I.N. Janes,” they carry out public art “attacks” on their small town, causing an uproar in the process.
There are a lot of formulaic elements to this story, to be sure. Each Jane fits comfortably into a typical high school genre: jock, drama nerd, and genius (though “Polly Jane” is a wry visual shout-out to alt-rocker PJ Harvey, right down to the scowl and bold eyebrows). There is the obligatory—though not overwhelming—Romantic Situation to be dealt with, as well as a hearty helping of revolt-against-parents-and-authority. However, the art gang—the backdrop for these overused themes—is what makes Plain Janes more entertaining than the usual teenage fare. The guerilla art installations are an example of positive community involvement and nonviolent political protest for thoughtful readers. It’s easy enough to look past some of the unrealistic parts of the story (How do they find the time to do all this stuff? Where are their parents?) and find value and meaning in it.
Acclaimed YA fiction writer Cecil Castellucci is best known for her other books about tough young women searching out a place in the world: 2005’s Boy Proof and last year’s The Queen of Cool. With this publication, the long-time comic book fan manages to carry over her talent for creating compelling characters, and hopefully she’ll continue to create in this format. Jim Rugg does not disappoint, either; his Janes are realistic-looking and likeable, and his illustrations are engaging and appropriately paced for the story. This is a promising debut for the Minx line, and as Vanity Fair blurbs on the back cover of Plain Janes, “You don’t have to be a comic book geek” to enjoy this graphic novel.

Dear Mr. Neal,
I have just read the most disturbing graphic novel currently being offered in Chapel Hill Comics. The book , I SHALL DESTROY ALL THE CIVILIZED PLANETS, features a small-headed super-intelligent man from outer space who takes it upon himself to monitor, bust up, and punish crime rings on planet earth.
Don’t misunderstand, I’m all for ending crime, but this so-called hero is just too bizarre and strange and honestly, just creepy cruel! Even our most sophisticated and dedicated readers would surely protest. In one episode, STARDUST turned 5 mobsters into 1 bad guy, shrank him down to the size of a giant rat, then flung him into the sea, where he was then tortured by a giant golden octopus. As if that were not enough, his one bad guy head reappeared ( his body remained rat shape), just as STARDUST returned to retrieve him. He traveled him through the air back to the city and flung him into the offices of the local police department…. Still in the form of a rat with the bad guy head!

There are other similar stories. For example, Phantoma, The Jungle Woman, whose head transforms into a skull when she discovers bad guys. I am not going to go into how she deals with these poor criminals but I will simply say it’s just too much, Mr. Neal, even for our shop! This is where we must draw the line. Forgive me for losing my composure, but I am quite frankly shook up by this book.

Due to the outrageous nature of this graphic novel I am proposing that we remove it from our shelves, effective immediately.Thank you in advance for your prompt response to this matter of great concern.
Vanessa
Manager and Your Dear Wife
P. S. Can we get a fainting couch for the office?
Dear Vanessa,Thank you for your recommendation. Due to this communique, I have ordered twenty more copies of I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets. Please be ready to sell them.
Your husband,
Andrew Neal
PS: I’m afraid we will need all the room in the office for more copies of I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is currently our best-selling comic, and in fact, is the best selling comic we’ve carried since I took over the store four years ago, so it doesn’t need any help.
Having said that, I wanted to put together a little review for the folks who followed Buffy on TV, but haven’t checked out the comic. And here it is:
AWESOME
Thanks,
Andrew Neal
Chapel Hill Comics
…just kidding! Seriously, there’s not a lot to say. Joss Whedon himself is writing the series, and as he’s proven with Astonishing X-Men and Fray, he’s just as good a comic writer as he is a TV writer. If you loved the TV show, and want to see what the characters do after Sunnydale is blown up, this is where to find out. As I write this, the first four-issue story arc is finished, and we have them all in stock, so you can get caught up.
Basically: TV and comics are two different media, so the TV show and the comics are going to be different out of necessity, but this is a fun comic, just like the show was a fun show, and as a long time Buffy fan (I started watching regularly halfway through the second season), I can say it’s very satisfying as a continuation of the story.
Thanks,
Andrew Neal

It has come to my attention that a few of you may be sleeping on World War Hulk. I know this because when folks ask me what’s new and good, and I say “World War Hulk!” with all the enthusiasm of a five-year-old who’s just been handed the keys to a monster truck with wings, most folks say, “Really?”
I’m here to let you know that World War Hulk is fantastic. What’s it about? Well, over the course of the last year of the Incredible Hulk (called Planet Hulk, available now at Chapel Hill Comics in a very attractive hardcover), Hulk was shot into space by Reed Richards, Tony Stark, Black Bolt, and Dr. Strange, ostensibly so that he can have some Hulk Time on a planet full of fluffy bunnies or something.
The problem is that they sent him to a world where he was enslaved and forced into gladiatorial combat, but then he busted out, took over the planet, and was in the process of taking care of the citizens of the planet and loving his new wife, when BAM! The spaceship that brought him there blows up the planet!
…and that’s where we begin World War Hulk. The basic premise is that the Hulk is mad, and he’s coming back to Earth for revenge on all the jerks who sent him into outer space. Do you want to know how mad the Hulk is? The Hulk is so mad, that HE PUNCHES METEORS WHILE HE RIDES TO EARTH ON THE OUTSIDE OF A STONE SPACESHIP.
It’s great. The story by Grek Pak is fun, and the art by John Romita Jr. is perfect. It’s both Bulky and incredibly kinetic. This is how I want superhero comics to be: no pretension, lots of hitting, off-the-charts ridiculousness, and incredible art.
Also: you don’t have to read any of the crossover tie-ins in order to follow the main World War Hulk series. You can if you want, but you don’t gotta, so big up to Marvel for that.
Alright then.

I thought I had no time for commentary this week, but once I saw this on the list, man, I made time. Devil Dinosaur is a big red dinosaur. He runs around with a proto-human named Moon Boy on his back. Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s not historically accurate (or prehistorically accurate, I guess), but neither is Fantastic Four! DC is reprinting Kamandi and and the Fourth World stuff, Marvel’s doing Devil Dinosaur, what else do we need for a complete 70’s Kirby collection? The Jimmy Olsens, Captain Americas, and Black Panthers are in print… so we need those random issues of First Issue Special, OMAC, The Demon, Machine Man, and 2001. I’m guessing that last one is never going to happen, if only because it was a licensed thing, but I would love to be proven wrong. At any rate: DEVIL DINOSAUR! Yes!

Our 4th of July Sale was a fantastic success. We sold boxes and boxes of fifty-cent comics, and several shelves worth of discounted graphic novels! And for those of you who missed it, you’ll get another shot!
We extending the now inaccurately named 4th of July Sale for a bit longer… just how long will depend on the response. That is, if you folks keep shopping the sale, we’ll continue it through next Wednesday, July 11. However, if the sale stuff just sits there, we’ll go ahead and move it out of the store! We doubt that’ll be the case, since we got such a huge response yesterday, though!
So, to review the terms of the sale:
- A ton of back issues at 50 cents each, or JUST $50 A BOX! That’s right, folks. Cheap.
- A selection of superhero, fiction, humor, and horror graphic novels at 30% off AND buy-3-get-1-free!
We have marked this stuff down so much because we need to make room for other material, and once it’s gone, it’s gone. Please come check out the sale if you haven’t had a chance already, and as long as there’s interest, and as long as we don’t sell it all, it’ll be on sale through next Wednesday!

Thanks,
Andrew Neal
