Hello there,

I’m proud to announce that I will be speaking next Thursday, February 28 as part of the UNC Friends of the Library’s Spring 2008 event lineup!

The title of my discussion is What Are These Graphic Novels I’ve Been Hearing So Much About?

I’ll talk about what graphic novels are, their history, and give examples of great graphic novels for all ages.

Again, the date is February 28. There will be a reception in the Main Lobby of Wilson Library on UNC campus at 5:00 pm. My presentation will start at 5:45 in the Pleasants Family Assembly Room, and I’ll answer any questions after I speak! Parking is available in most campus lots after 5:00 pm.

The presentation is free and open to the public!

This Saturday, February 23, from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm, Chapel Hill Comics will be set up at the Town of Carrboro’s First Annual Carrboro Collector’s Fair!

We’ll have lots of 50-cent comics, cheap graphic novels, and much more! It costs a buck to get into the fair (kids under six are free), and it’s located in the Carrboro Century center across from Weaver Street Market! Come by and pick up some cheap goodies!

For those of you who just want to come by the store for your regular Saturday Chapel Hill Comics experience, we will of course be open regular hours from 10am until 9pm!

If our sales of The Walking Dead and The Zombie Survival Guide are any indication, there are a lot of zombie fans in the area. We think they’ll be happy to learn this:

Chapel Hill Comics is proud to offer its customers free tickets to a screening of the new George Romero movie, Diary of the Dead!

The tickets are courtesy of WXDU 88.7 FM.

The film is playing at Durham’s Carolina Theatre with this special sneak preview on Thursday, February 14.

Immediately preceding the film, there will be a Zombie Costume Contest. Also that night, starting at 9:30, WXDU will host the “Eat Our Hearts Out Zombie Dance Party” at Bull McCabe’s. All are welcome at the party regardless of movie attendance.

Passes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please arrive at the theatre early on the 14th. The film’s distributors are intentionally overbooking to insure capacity and non-admittance is not the responsibility of the theatre or WXDU. No one will be admitted once the film begins.

Each pass admits two people, and we can’t hold them for you; you need to swing by the store to pick them up. We also have to limit these to one pass per person.

Castle Waiting - I have always loved fairy tales. The characters in this book are all so strange and beautiful. It bring tears to my eyes. You will meet faires, unwed mommy princesses, bearded ladies, nuns, a talking horse, and so much more. This book is about friendship, kindness, truth, and love. If my eyes had a nose this novel would surely smell like freshly baked, and still warm bread.

Mary Perkins Vol.1-3 - Can’t say enough about Mary Perkins. I love this gal. She is my mother, my fairy godmother, my sister, my best friend, my darling wife… Oh how I adore Mary Perkins.

Vampire Loves - Joann Sfar is at it again with the most romantic and charming vampire tale I have ever read.

Dr. Strange: The Oath - Brian K. Vaughan - This book has everything I want out of a superhero comic. Action, adventure, treacherous villians, a chivilress hero, and ah yes…the NIGHT NURSE. Just a touch of romance makes this short novel a classic.

Love and Sex with Robots - Non-Fiction- Explore the possibility of human intimacy and yes, even love with robots. Using object attachment theroy, the reasons that we fall in love, and artificial intelligence data, David Levy has opened my eyes. At once shocking and convincing. The future is breathtaking… I’ll have two please!

Professor’s Daughter - Joan Sfar and Emmaneul Gibert- Romance between a lovely lady and dashing mummy. Set in 19th century London. Charming.

Terry and the Pirates - Take a long and penetrating look into the past if you imagine your future filled with adventure on the hi seas with a sexy villianess who would just as soon kill you as kiss you.

Spent - Take a lesson from Joe Matt, there is nothing wrong with rubbing one out now and again (or in Joe Matt’s case constantly and non-stop), while you wait patiently for the love of your life.
