Friday night I was the guest at DSI Comedy Theater in Carrboro for their Mister Diplomat show, where their guest tells stories, and the comedians use the stories as a basis for their improvisational comedy. I’ve done the show four times now, and it’s always a lot of fun!

Holy Cow! All the preparations for our big move kept me from announcing that Chapel Hill Comics was a finalist for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award!

The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award is an annual, international award given to an individual retailer who has done an outstanding job of supporting the comics art medium both in the community and within the industry at large. It’s given each year at the San Diego Comic Con. All of the finalists this year were fantastic choices and could easily have been the winner. We’re proud to have been included!

Well, folks, we’re open in our new location!  We’ve been up and running here since Wednesday morning, and things are going great!

We’ll announce our grand opening party in the next couple of days, so stay tuned for that!

Hey folks,

As though you haven’t been bombarded with enough email newsletters from Chapel Hill Comics this week (WE ARE MOVING THIS WEEKEND), here’s another to let you know that I will be the special guest at DSI Comedy’s Mister Diplomat Show on Friday, August 29 at 9:30 pm!

The way it works is this: I will get up on stage and talk.  The Mister Diplomat team will then politely escort me off stage, then perform hilarious skits based on my monologue.  They’re so funny they will make you think I was funny, and ADMISSION IS FREE.

I’ve done this three or four times now, and it’s always a lot of fun.  Please come out if you have the time!

Note to parents: the language in these performances can get pretty raw, especially when I tell stories about my Dad, so it’s probably not a good show for kids.

Here’s our press release for the upcoming move:

Chapel Hill Comics Doubles Size, Adds Inventory and Events

CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA (August 13, 2008) - Chapel Hill Comics, one of downtown Chapel Hill’s oldest businesses, is moving to a bigger and better location!  They’re moving just seven doors down the street to 316 West Franklin Street, between Ham’s and Hill Country Woodworks.  In addition to more display space for books and comics, the shop will feature reading groups, cartooning classes, and kids’ birthday parties.

After the store closes at 9:00 pm on Saturday, August 23, it will remain closed for three days and will reopen at the new location, 316 West Franklin Street, at 10:00 am on Wednesday, August 27.  A reopening party will occur in September.

“In the three and a half years since we moved from Rosemary Street to West Franklin Street, we’ve expanded our business significantly, so we were ecstatic about the opportunity to move into a larger location in the same general area,” said owner Andrew Neal.  “In addition to being able to carry more books and graphic novels, this bigger space is going to allow us to host many more events.  We’ve had lots of success with our signings, parties, and our annual Kids’ Art Show, so we’re very excited to be able to expand in this way!”

The new location will have more than twice as much space overall, which will include areas for signings, reading groups, cartooning classes, and birthday parties, as well as a stage for performance events.  Information on events will be available at the store’s web page, chapelhillcomics.com, as well as in-store and via the Chapel Hill Comics email newsletter.

Chapel Hill Comics has been voted Best Comic Book Store in the Triangle by Independent readers in 2007 and 2008, and was a finalist in 2008 for the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award, an international award which honors the best comic shops in the world.

Hey, Folks!

UPDATE! Click here for a link to our press release about the move!

Saturday, August 23 will be our last day of business at the current location.  We will be closed for three days and reopen at our new location on Wednesday, August 27!

The new location is just seven doors down at 316 W Franklin Street, right next to Ham’s, in the former location of Paint the Earth. We’ll still be carrying the wide variety of comics, books, and graphic novels we’ve always carried, and the larger space will give us the ability to widen that range even further!

In addition to the newly expanded sales floor, we’ll be able to host a much wider variety of events at the store, from signings to concerts, to reading groups, to cartooning classes and birthday parties! We’ll have more information on different types of events and gatherings for you soon.

In conclusion: New store! Open August 27! Still open in the old store until August 23! Yay!
