Before I get into the promotion of our upcoming events, I would like to thank all our customers who donated last week to our Haiti Fundraiser! We collected $683.96 in donations from our customers, and as promised, are matching $500 of that, so we sent off a grand total of $1183.96. If you intended to donate and didn’t have a chance, we encourage you to do so on your own.

ON TO THE EVENTS
Folks, it’s time to flip your calendars ahead a month and mark them up. Chapel Hill Comics is hosting three fantastic events in February, and they’re all going to be great.
Get ready for the funkiest event of the winter. On February 6, we’ll host Jim Rugg, artist and co-creator of Afrodisiac, and Chris Pitzer, publisher of Afrodisiac and president of Adhouse Books. What is Afrodisiac? It’s blaxploitation comics drawn in the style of 1970’s Marvel Comics, and it’s an early contended for the best book of 2010!
Ben Towle is the artist of Disney’s newest graphic novel for younger readers, Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean! Join us on Sunday, February 21, when Mr. Towle will give a presentation on the creation of the book, and will sign copies! Bring the kids, let them ask questions and learn about the process, and grab them a copy of the book, signed by Ben Towle!
One of our most popular signings last year was was Ursula Vernon, artist of the graphic novel/prose hybrid Dragonbreath! This February she’ll be back to sign the second book in the series, Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs! She’ll also be signing copies of her young readers novel Nurk (One of Oprah’s picks! Not too shabby) and book collections of her ongoing webcomic Digger!
Now with a wide range of comics and books like that, I know at least one of them has got to appeal to you. Look for reminders in the upcoming weeks, and we hope to see you then!

Please excuse this brief non-comic related divergence.
You’ve probably heard about the 7.0 magnitude earthquake which struck Haiti on Tuesday. It’s a bad situation (to understate things).
Chapel Hill Comics will collect donations in-store for the next week, and then will pass the money along to Doctors Without Borders, and will match our customer donations, up to a total of $500.
So, anything you can give, from a penny to a twenty, is appreciated. We’ll match it. Paying with cash and don’t want to carry around your change? Drop it in the box, and we’ll match it.

Wow! It’s our third signing in February 2010, and it’ll be a doozy! One of our most successful signing events in 2009 was when we hosted Ursula Vernon to celebrate the release of the first volume of Dragonbreath! The second book in this young readers series is due this February, and we’re happy to say that Ms. Vernon is returning for another signing event!
On Saturday, February 27, from 1pm to 3pm, please come meet Ursula Vernon, pick up some books, and get her to sign them for you!
In Dragonbreath, Ursula Vernon uses both comic panels and text to tell the story of Danny Dragonbreath, the only mythical dragon in a school for reptiles and Amphibians.
Kirkus gave Dragonbreath a starred review which stated: “…Danny D’s first outing will leave readers in stitches– and on tenterhooks waiting for the next one…”
Ursula’s books are no stranger to praise.Oprah’s Book Clubincluded Ursula’s previous book, Nurk: The Strange, Surprising Adventures of a (Somewhat) Brave Shrew, on its Kids Reading List for kids 10 to 12 years old!
At the signing, we’ll have copies on hand of both volumes of Dragonbreath, including the brand new Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs, as well as Nurk! We’ll also have copies of the books in Ms. Vernon’s ongoing comic series Digger, the tagline of which is, “A Wombat. A Dead God. A very peculiar epic.” Digger is recommended for older children, teens, and adults.
Note: This event was originally scheduled for Saturday, February 20, but has been moved to allow Mr. Towle to make an appearance at the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont.
February 2010 at Chapel Hill Comics is going to be chock full of great signings! Here’s the next one!
On Sunday, February 21, 2010, from 2pm until 4pm, Chapel Hill Comics will host Ben Towle, artist of Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean, published by Hyperion/Disney and presented by the Center for Cartoon Studies. It’s a graphic novel aimed at young readers, which was written by Sarah Stewart Taylor and drawn by Mr. Towle. It will be released this February.
In addition to signing copies of Amelia Earhart; This Broad Ocean, Mr. Towle will also give a presentation about the process he used to create the art, which should be highly interesting both to people who want to learn about how a professional cartoonist works, and kids who want to see how the book they’re reading was made!

One of our customers has started a local comic art drawing meetup, and the first meeting is January 20th. I’m posting his email about it here, with his permission.
Chapel Hill Comics is not officially involved in this meetup, but like Jan says, we do have copies of Drawing Words and Writing Pictures by Matt Madden and Jessica Abel, which he’ll be using in the group. Here is his announcement:
We are starting a comics group that will focus on practicing and honing the skills involved in creating comics.
1st and 3rd Wednesdays the first one would be on January 20th at 6:30.
We will meet twice a month for a couple of hours each session. The group will do exercises from the book “Drawing Words & Writing Pictures” by Jessica Abel and Matt Madden. We will also look at and talk about our homework from the previous meeting.
The lessons focus on different aspects of comics such as single panel, strip, and longer stories; penciling and inking; narrative arcs and characters; and layout design. This group is for anyone who likes comics and telling stories, you don’t have to be confident in your drawing skills. We will have space for some kids but they will have to be comfortable hanging with a bunch of adults and taking care of themselves.
If you do decide to do it you would get more out of it if you buy yourself a copy of the book. Chapel Hill Comics said they could order them for us.

NOTE! We are starting an hour earlier to give folks who are nervous about icy driving conditions a chance to pop in early! It is now from 5pm until 6pm!
Saturday, February 6, from 5pm until 9pm, Chapel Hill Comics will host a signing for the splendiferous new Afrodisiac hardcover by Jim Rugg and Brian Maruca!

We’ll be hosting two of the geniuses reponsible for bringing us Afrodisiac: Jim Rugg and Chris Pitzer.
Jim Rugg, with Brian Maruca, is the artist and co-creator of Afrodisiac. They also worked together on Street Angel, the saga of a thirteen year-old skateboarding homeless ninja girl, which is also a Chapel Hill Comics favorite. He also provided the art for PLAIN Janes and Janes in Love, which were written by YA Novelist Cecil Castellucci, as well as the brand new One Model Nation, which was written by Dandy Warhols frontman Courtney Taylor.
Chris Pitzer is the man in charge at Adhouse Books, one of our favorite publishers at Chapel Hill Comics. He’s responsible for putting out a wide range of accessible yet unique books, many of which have been best sellers here. Some of the finest Adhouse books include: Pulphope by Paul Pope, Process Recess I, II, and III by James Jean, Chapel Hill Comics favorite Mesmo Delivery by Raphael Grampa, and many more.
